Beatrix Potter ballet Pigling Bland

quillerpen asked:

My penultimate excerpt from the Tales of Beatrix Potter ballet. Ashtons choreographic skills can make even pigs look romantic. I know composer John Lanchberry used Victorian music hall songs as the source of his music for this ballet and if anyone could tell me the name of this piece of music I would love to know.

The Tale Of Pigling Bland.. Such a beautiful, mysterious, nostalgic title of a wonderful novel by the genius.. Beatrix Potter. This ballet is charming, romantic… wonderful. Exquisite. I am extremely passionate for ballets and this has to be one of the best. How Pigling Bland moves… tipper tapper, In a flamboyant and light manor. The tears of joy will spread down my cheeks, as i applaud this fabulous performance.

Thanks for that – I’d seen that on the record cover too, but I’m sure I heard that song once (an old musical hall one). the last line of the chorus is something like ‘when the …is gone’.
The book ‘Tale of the tales’ about making the ballet is worth reading too.

Music: “is an inspired blend of hitherto unheard period melodies discovered and transcribed by John Lanchberry from manuscripts in the British Museum” (from the back of the tape). Even in these difficult costumes, the footwork and epaulement is stunningly beautiful.
Charm, romance, musical beauty-I wish I saw Ashton more often. This is such a beautiful pas. Think of how many choreographers out there these days that cannot choreograph a pas. And, with all the challenges of a pig costume.
