Absinthy asked:

I’m trying to do a bit of research on various series and children’s books based on woodland animal characters (Typical forest creatures like Mice, badgers, moles, squirrels, ETC) . The characters need to have a victorian style or refined background (think Winni the pooh, not bugs bunny) . They need to be well drawn and not too “cartoonish” or stylized. I know of a few but am looking for more series, that I am not familiar with. Here is the list I have so far:
Beatrix Potter’s Series
Brambly Hedge series
Foxwood Tales
Bramble Hill tales
Wee Forest Folk
Wind in the Willows
Bunnykins

Please add to the list if you know of additional series.

    How about “Frog and Toad?”
Or any books by Jan Brett, such as “The Mitten” and her Hedgie books? Although I’m not sure they are Victorian but they are not Bugs Bunny-ish.

    Additional:

Graeme Rowland Base- “Animalia,” “Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky,” etc.

Maybe Eric Carle? Although his illustrations are beautiful, I don’t think they pertain to what you are asking. But you might want to take a look :)

I’m not sure of your time frame. These people may be too contemporary for you, but stylistically they seem appropriate and may be worth your time to look at.

Tasha Tudor, who does not always focus on animals, but does so beautifully, at times, and Jan Brett, whose illustrations are marvels of detail.

There are at least two more who are eluding me, if I think of them I’ll edit. It sounds like a nice project. Good luck.
